Excursion to Rome October 28
Italy is one of the most enticing destinations in all of Europe, Italy is famous for its delicious cuisine, the inspired architecture, the spectacular landscape and the living heritage of art. As the birthplace of the Roman Empire and the Renaissance, it is not surprising that Italy should be among the richest countries in masterpieces of art and architecture, or that it should have more UNESCO World Heritage sites than any other country in the world. But Italy's top attractions aren't all about art and architecture. the country is blessed with lakes, mountains and a dramatic coastline that also give it outstanding natural attractions
Meeting at the airport and flight to the capital of Italy, Rome. Our tour of the "Eternal City" will begin with the area of Eur and as we head towards the Historic Center we will admire the Circo Massimo the largest hippodrome in the world with 300.000 spectators. Then we will end up at the Colosseum, the largest surviving ancient Roman amphitheater in the world. Once the shouts of the gladiators and the howls of the mob resounded, while later the blows of hammers that removed the plinths and marbles that decorated it to build churches and palaces of papal Rome. Passing through the Imperial Market Street (Imperial Forums) in the heart of ancient Rome, we will reach Capitol Hill and Piazza Venezia with the massive monument dedicated to Victor Emmanuel II, the first king of united Italy, in which the monument of the Unknown Soldier is also located. Free time in the city center, transfer and check-in at the hotel.
Breakfast at the hotel. Departure for a unique walking tour, starting from Popolo Square (Piazza del Popolo) we will pass by the Spanish Square with the famous steps (Piazza di Spagna), the Trevi Fountain to drop the established coin, the Pantheon, Piazza Navona with the fountain of the four rivers. At the end of our wonderful sightseeing walk in the heart of the city, we will end up in the famous Trastevere, the medieval quarter of Rome with its traditional restaurants. Free time. Overnight.
Breakfast at the hotel. Today we suggest a guided tour of the independent Vatican City, to take a tour of its famous museums, with exhibits including famous statues from the ancient world and the Renaissance, such as the Laocoon complex, Apollo of Belvedere, works of Giotto, Rafael, Da Vinci, Caravaggio et al. Passing through the famous Corridors of the Candlemas, of the Tapestry, of Geographical Maps and the Halls with Raphael's frescoes, we will end up at the Sistine Chapel with the legendary ceiling painted by Michelangelo. Subsequently, we will pass by the magnificent Basilica of Saint Peter, the largest church in the world, built on the tomb of the Apostle Peter where, among others, we will see the Pieta of Michael Angelos and the ciborium that dominates the papal altar, work of Bernini. Overnight. For the guided tour of the Vatican Museums, you must register and prepay before your departure (75€ for adults and €60 for children up to 18 years . The price includes entrance to the Vatican, the cost of booking at Museums, headphones and the tour by a local Greek-speaking guide). Mandatory reservation and advance payment of entry 20 days before the visit. Otherwise it is not possible for us to secure your entry to the Vatican Museums.
Breakfast at the hotel . Free time, we recommend you, optionally, the day trip to Naples. Boarding the bus and departure for the capital of Campania, Naples, a city bustling and full of contrasts. It is the largest port of Southern Italy, and third largest city in the country after Rome and Milan. We will get to know its historical center, which is the largest in Europe and has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. It was the capital of a duchy, kingdoms and a great Empire, especially the Renaissance and Enlightenment eras. In our panoramic tour we will find ourselves in the neighborhood of Raccanapoli, with its narrow picturesque streets but also the busy Via San Biaggio, that crosses the city. We will see the city's Gothic Cathedral dedicated to the patron Saint San Gennaro, the Castello del Uovo, the Royal Palace, the Loggia of Umberto and the oldest opera house in Europe: the San Carlo Theater. On the tour of the historic center of Naples you understand that Diego Armando Maradona, one of the greatest football players of all time was, is and will be a 'larger than life' figure: adorns all the frescoes, he stars in the city's massive graffiti, decorates almost ALL the interiors in restaurants next to the icons of the Virgin Mary and of course takes the place of Agios in the family iconostasis. Only this spoiled brat from the barrios of Buenos Aires could, to understand the heartbreaking demand of the Neapolitans for another victory, the blood boiling for revenge against the rich of the North, the outcast of the one who had nothing against everyone who had everything. Finally we will be at Posillipo Hill from where we will have a wonderful panoramic view of Naples and Vesuvius. Free time for those who wish to visit the Sanseverino Metropolitan Museum, famous for the separate veils with transparent details carved into marble statues. Return to our hotel. Overnight.
Breakfast at the hotel. Free day until the time we will be transferred to the airport for our return flight to Athens.
