Cyprus excursion with Limassol Carnival
The Cyprus is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world, with over 3 millions of visitors every year. The Cyprus became a member of the European Union 2004 and the Eurozone 2008. It is considered a developed country, with high per capita income and a very high human development index. There are many outdoor activities in Cyprus, whether you are traveling alone or with your family or friends. The island of love, as is the nickname of Cyprus, has some fantastic activities suitable for all ages and interests, whether you are a history buff or a nature lover, there is something for everyone.
Gathering in the morning at Eleftherios Venizelos Airport for the Cyprus Excursion with Limassol Carnival, delivery of our luggage and boarding our flight to Cyprus, specifically Larnaca. Arrival and we begin our acquaintance with the majestic church of Agios Lazaros, building of the emperor Leo VI the wise, in the 9th century. It is one of the most beautiful examples of Byzantine architecture in Cyprus. After admiring the wonderful frescoes and paying thanks to the Saint's tomb which is located under the Holy Altar, we will continue the course to Finikoudes beach, a beautiful area that reaches to the marina of Larnaca. This is the most secular part of the city with cafes, bars and restaurants for all tastes. Time for a walk and to enjoy our first coffee on the island and also for a quick snack. Also here we will see the Larnaca Fortress, a 13th century building. Then departure for Limassol, the "capital" of the Cypriot summer and the largest port of the island. In essence, Limassol is a well-organized tourist center, which is constantly renewed and today has developed into a popular holiday center for both local and incoming tourism. The length of the beach that reaches the 15 km, many walking spots, cycle paths, organized beaches, small and large hotels, restaurants and cafes make up its image. We will visit the Medieval Castle of Limassol, in the heart of the old town, above the old port where today the Medieval Museum of Cyprus is housed. According to tradition, here he married the 1191 Richard the Lionheart crowned Berengaria of Navarre as Queen of England. End, arrival at our accommodation hotel, arrangement in the rooms and rest. Breakfast at a rich buffet and today our day is entirely dedicated to enjoying the uniqueness and fun offered by the best and most famous carnival in Cyprus which is none other than the carnival of Limassol. A celebration eagerly awaited by young and old alike, locals and visitors. This is how we too will live these special moments, the climax of the festivities which is the day of Carnival, that is, the day when the big parade is organized and rightly considered the "Festival of Limassol". With the celebrations starting from 12:00 approximately and last until late afternoon we will have plenty of time at our disposal to experience this great feast. Return to our hotel and rest. Our evening free, dinner at the hotel and overnight stay.
Buffet breakfast and departure for the capital, the commercial, business and administrative center of the island, Nicosia. It is a city where today the European and the Oriental elements coexist harmoniously. Busy streets but also small pedestrianized alleys, cafes and bistros, commercial stores, the stone Venetian walls that enclose the old town, minarets and small souvenir shops make up the identity of Nicosia. We will start our acquaintance with the Tomb of Makedonitissa Military cemetery and hero near the monastery of Makedonitissa. Officers and soldiers are buried here, who fell defending Cyprus during the invasion of the Turkish troops 1974. We continue with the Prison Tombs in the Nicosia Central Prisons, in which they had been buried during the Liberation War 1955-59 the nine hanged by the English. To the right of the entrance are the tombs of the heroes and to the left the cells of the dead and the gallows on which the English executed the nine heroes. We continue with the palace of the archdiocese and a visit to the holy church of Agios Ioannis with the wonderful frescoes. Then we will see the Venetian walls of old Nicosia, the People's Neighborhood and the green line that divides Nicosia into Greek and Turkish sectors. Free time for lunch and shopping at our disposal and departure for our return to our hotel. Rest and our evening free. Buffet dinner at the hotel and overnight stay.
Buffet breakfast and departure for our excursion to sea-loving Famagusta. Our first stop is Deryneia, in the arms of the gulf of Famagusta, in the area of Kokkinohoria. Deryneia, famous for its juicy and sweet fruits, is waiting for us to explore. We will see the monument to the fallen and missing, we will go to the cultural center and climb to the roof of the building where with binoculars we can see the occupied area and the city of Famagusta. We will not fail to pass by the Folklore Museum and the Folk Art Museum. We continue to Varosia. In the 70s, Famagusta and specifically Varosia was the most popular tourist destination in Cyprus. The rich and famous like Richard Burton, Elizabeth Taylor and Brigitte Bardot enjoyed rest and fun on one of the best beaches in Cyprus. Some even compared Varosia to the French Riviera. Where carelessness once dwelt, the carefree and the sun, now silent buildings, empty streets, barricades and military barricades. We will tour the old town of Famagusta (which in Latin means city buried in the sand) as well as the trendy side of town. The first sensation created by the area, is that everything is left in '74. Ready-made buildings, vegetation that covers everything, erasing the road boundaries & sidewalks, and emerging through buildings, are just some of the elements that make up the walled part of Famagusta at the moment. In the devastation caused by the Turkish invasion and the organized looting that followed, this year has also been added, worsening the situation. Often, this part of Famagusta is described by the terms "ghost town" or "dead town". We will see the infamous Walls of Famagusta and we will walk inside them having the opportunity to see a multitude of Byzantine and other monuments of the occupied city. After the shocking images and this special excursion we will depart for the airport where we will board the flight back to Athens.
