Meeting at the airport for the French Riviera Excursion October 28 and to Marseille. Upon our arrival, we board the coach with Gord as our first stop (Gordes), the jewel of Provence. Built on the southern edge of the Plateau de Vaucluse, with the high ones, stone houses built on different levels. We will walk through the graphics, cobbled alleys and we will reach the beautiful, picturesque square with the fountain and the beautiful mansions. We will see the Notre-Dame de Sénanque Abbey, with the wonderful lavenders. Our next stop is the romantic Avignon, the papal city on the left bank of the Rhone River. We will see the largest medieval palace, the Palace of the Popes (Palace of the Popes) and the Angladon Museum with archaeological finds. We will admire the famous Avignon Bridge, Avignon Bridge, of the 12th century and we will walk through the old town with its cobbled streets to the Place de l’Horloge, where we will learn the secret of painted windows. We will also see the Town Hall with the Clock Tower and the theater and we will be enchanted by the famous Rocher des Doms gardens. Breakfast at our hotel and departure for Aix-en-Provence, the traditional city with the "thousand fountains" and the historic squares. We will walk along the Cours Mirabeau, the boulevard in the city center with its shops and cafes and we will admire the Cathedral of St. Save, Gothic style, with its extremely impressive interior. Departure for Saint Tropez, famous for its glamorous guests and luxurious life. The much-discussed film by Roger Vadim "And God... Created Woman" was filmed here (1956), with the inimitable Brigitte Bardot. We will see the harbor with its multitude of shops and restaurants and the Maison des Papillons (Butterfly Museum), the unique home of Brigitte Bardot. We will walk through the beautiful and picturesque old town and see the Musée de la Gendarmerie et du Cinéma, with a wealth of exhibits from the films of Louis de Fines and the Musée de l’Annonciade, Art Museum. Departure and arrival in Cannes. Check in at our hotel and in the late afternoon get ready for a tour of the city hosting the International Film Festival. We will see La Croisette (The Croisette), the famous avenue with luxury hotels and restaurants, the Cannes Castle Museum, which from the 2021 it has been renamed the Museum of World Exploration and La Suquet, the old city of Cannes. Return to our hotel and stay overnight.
After we have our breakfast, we leave for Mendon, the "yellow" capital of Europe, so called because of the yellow color of its buildings, but also of the large production of lemons and oranges. From 1896 and every year the famous Lemon Festival takes place here (Lemon Festival) which attracts a large number of visitors. We will walk through the picturesque streets of the city and admire the Basilica of St. Michael with the beautiful square paved with mosaics, the Old Tower Cemetery and the Botanical Garden. We continue our journey to Nice, the second largest city in southern France after Marseille. We will walk the famous "English Walk", pedestrian street length 7 kilometers, which was named so by the English who visited the area for their summer holidays and is the most photographed spot on the Cote D'Azur . We will see this beautiful medieval city with the Court Square and the Rossetti Square with the magnificent Cathedral of Saint Reparata, of the 17th century. We will see Castle Hill Park with the Cascade du Château artificial waterfall, which captivates with its beauty and the Massena square with the fountain of the Sun god, Apollo. We will walk the Course Saleya, where the heart of Nice beats, with the shops, restaurants and bars. Return to our hotel and stay overnight.
Breakfast and departure for Ez, the medieval city of the French Riviera. We will see the Church of the Holy Cross (Chapel of the Holy Cross) of the 14th century with its exotic gardens full of succulents and cacti and we will walk through the narrow medieval streets of the old town. Departure for Monaco, the Principality which is the home of the Formula Grand Prix 1 and tax haven worldwide. We will see Monte Carlo with its unique architectural buildings and the famous Casino, as well as the Opera of Monte Carlo, built it 1878. The Palace of the Prince of Monaco awaits us, built by the Grimaldi family the 1297. Visitors to the palace can tour the grounds, when the Royal family is away, and to admire a gallery with frescoes dating from the 15th century, the Mazarin Room with its wooden floors, the blue room, covered in blue and gold and the throne room with its large Renaissance fireplace. We will see the Museum of Oceanography with the oldest aquarium in the world and the 19th century Cathedral, where we can visit the graves of Prince Rainer and Princess Grace. We will admire their enchanting gardens of Ag. Martino, the Japanese Garden and Princess Grace's Rose Garden. The 11th century Sainte-Dévote Chapel, will delight us with its architecture, but also with the fact that this is where the Princess leaves her wedding bouquet after her wedding with the Prince of Monaco. Return to our hotel and stay overnight.
After our breakfast, departure for Saint Paul de Vance (Saint-Paul de Vence), the village of artists. The village is surrounded by medieval walls, which were built the 1538 by the king of France, Francis I and bathed in Mediterranean light. At the entrance we will see large petanque courts, which is the favorite sport of the French of the South. In its narrow picturesque streets we will see wonderful houses with stone facades and many galleries, such as the ART Gallery 31, the Di Allure Art Gallery and the Kleinberg Workshop. The village has hosted world cinema stars, like Greta Garbo, Sophia Loren and Catherine Deneuve. Artists usually spent their nights at the Colombe d'Or, which is located in front of the old city walls. Picasso also used to eat at the Colombe d'Or restaurant, while the cafés of Saint-Paul were a meeting place for artists. We will also see the chapel La Chapelle des Pénitents Blancs, which was restored and decorated in the early 21st century by the Belgian artist, Jean-Michele Folon. Next is Antibes, the ancient Greek city of Antipolis which was also founded by the ancient Phocaeans. We will be enchanted by the low stone houses, the beautiful cantons and the unique view of the Mediterranean. In this cultural center of the Blue Coast, Nikos Kazantzakis lived the last years of his life and there he breathed his last 1957. We will see the Archaeological Museum and the Fortress that dominates the port (Fort Carre), where it was built 1550 and in it Napoleon the Great was imprisoned. Waiting for us is the house where Pablo Picasso lived and which today is a Museum that houses works of this famous painter, but also others, like Léger and Miró. We return to our hotel – Overnight.
Breakfast at our hotel and departure to explore the largest city on the Côte d'Azur, the stately port of France and the city founded by the ancient Phocaeans in the 7th century. e.g. We will see the old port with the walls that protected the heart of the trade of the Mediterranean. We will admire the Notre-Dame-de-la-Garde Basilica, which dominates the city with the all-gold statue of the Virgin Mary holding the divine infant in the highest tower of the Basilica. Θα δούμε το Museum of Civilizations of Europe and the Mediterranean, which hosts works by artists from all Mediterranean countries. Le Panier awaits us, the ancient Greek picturesque district, which is the oldest urban neighborhood in France and is reminiscent of Anafiotika in Athens. The Museum of Medieval Archeology and Arts of Africa is also hosted there, of Oceania and America full of precious treasures. We will not miss to try the famous bouillabaisse, seafood soup, which, according to legend, made by the goddess Aphrodite for the god Hephaestus. In the afternoon transfer to the airport and return flight to Athens with the images and aromas of the French Riviera and Provence accompanying us.
