Tour of Maltezana & in her country Astypalea

Maltezana – The fishing village of pirates

Our first acquaintance with her Astypalea starts from the picturesque fishing village of Analipsi, known as Maltese. It is a beautiful and sheltered settlement with a naturally protected harbor, which for centuries was a stronghold of Maltese pirates – hence the name "Maltezana".

His monument dominates the bay of Kareklis Jean‑Baptiste Bisson, which recalls the historical period of piracy in the Aegean. During our tour we will get to know important historical points of the settlement, such as:

• the Baths of Talaras

• the impressive mosaic zodiac

• the early Christian basilicas of Kareklis and of Agia Varvara Astypalea

These monuments bear witness to the region's glorious and prosperous past.

The walk continues on the fish ladder, where we will see the traditional fishermen's boats but also the foundations of the coastal houses that were destroyed by the great tsunami of 1956. Through stories and narratives we will get to know the daily life and adventures of the inhabitants of the settlement.

Tour of the Town and the Castle

Our tour continues in the graphic Country of Astypalea, with the starting point the central square and the famous windmills which are one of the most characteristic symbols of the island.

Here we will learn about the architecture and operation of a traditional windmill, while a picturesque path between white houses will lead us to the spectacular Astypalea Castle.

During the route we will make stops to enjoy the unique view of the Aegean and get to know the traditional architecture of the island. The Venetian castle, which dominates over the Country, narrates through its walls the history of centuries and the course of the inhabitants of Astypalaia.

Panagia Portaitissa

Then we will visit the impressive Panagia Portaitissa of Astypalea, one of the most important churches of the island. Built next to the castle, stands out for its special architecture that combines elements of Orthodox and Catholic tradition.

The icon of Panagia is a faithful copy of the icon of Panagia Portaitissa from Iberon Monastery in the Mount Athos.

Just before we return to the main square, we will also visit the unique archaeological find of the island: the infant cemetery of the 7th century BC, a rare find of global importance.

Full Day Cruise to the Islands

The sea adventure begins with a spectacular destination Red Cliff. The steep red cliffs hugging the turquoise waters create an impressive natural landscape that takes your breath away.

Then we head towards the small islets:

• Lame-mouthed

• Mosquito

These small islands, which in the past were hideouts of pirates, host today some of the most beautiful beaches of Astypalaia.

In Kounoupa a narrow strip of land joins two small hills creating a unique natural landscape, while in Koutsomytis the turquoise waters are reminiscent of an exotic destination.

During the cruise you will enjoy swimming in the deep blue waters, stories from the captain about the pirates of the Aegean and refreshing fresh fruit on deck.
