Gathering early in the morning for the October 28 Excursion to Bulgaria Sofia and Bansko. After some intermediate stops for food and rest we will reach Promahonas, to cross the border to neighboring Bulgaria. After the necessary check of our documents, we continue to the capital of Bulgaria, the imposing Sofia, where we will arrive in the late afternoon. Check-in at the hotel, our stay and the evening free to move around the city on an individual schedule since our hotel is central. Overnight.
Breakfast buffet and today we will meet Sofia, a large city built at the foot of the imposing Vitosha Mountain (Vitosha) with a huge history, important monuments, large squares and modern buildings. Our tour will begin with a visit to the former baths of the city where today this historical building houses the Sofia History Museum with exhibits from prehistory, antiquity, the Middle Ages up to the modern era. Then we'll get to the bigger one, Sofia's oldest and most famous park, Borisova Gradina. The park is a favorite spot for locals who stop by for a break from work or enjoy an afternoon stroll before heading home. Time for a walk and coffee in the park and we continue to the Bridge of Eagles and the impressive Alexander Nevsky Cathedral. It is the most famous attraction in Sofia and one of the largest churches of the Orthodox Church in the whole world since it can accommodate more than 5.000 people. We will close our tour with one of the most historic churches, the Holy Church of Agia Sophia. Afterward, noon now, we will have plenty of time at our disposal to walk the wide pedestrianized Vitosha Avenue and main shopping street of Sofia length 2,7 kilometers full of shops, cafes and restaurants. Time for optional food and shopping and return to our hotel for rest. Free evening and overnight stay.
Breakfast buffet and we start for a nearby and beautiful excursion to Mount Vitosha. In just half an hour we can find ourselves in a green landscape with numerous hiking trails, which rise through coniferous forests and glades full of fragrant flowers, leading the visitor to true oases of wild nature. For the residents of Sofia, Vitosha is the favorite place for recreation and entertainment, and regardless of the season, they go there every weekend to enjoy nature. Free time to enjoy the mountain and the wonderful view and return to Sofia to close our acquaintance with the important sights. So we will visit the parliament, the Ivan Vazon National Theater to arrive at the most impressive and modern building in Sofia, the National Palace of Culture. Time for lunch and a walk on our now favorite shopping street, Vitosha Avenue. Return to our hotel for rest. Free evening and overnight stay.
Breakfast buffet and time in Sofia for coffee and our last purchases. Then we depart for the largest and most impressive of all Bulgarian Orthodox monasteries, his monastery Saint John of Rila, as is his full name. It is one of the greatest architectural masterpieces of the Bulgarian National Renaissance, proclaimed by the 1983 Its World Heritage Site Ui don't know. After we pass the entrance of the monastery, which consists of a carved wooden door of 15th century, we will meet in an enclosed paved courtyard, with the church, the tower and centuries-old trees in its center. Today we can relax and enjoy the hotel spa using the indoor heated pool with jacuzzi free of charge, the hammam and the sauna but also to walk in Bansko to drink our coffee and have lunch. Alternatively, we can follow our optional excursion to the historical Plovdiv. The old town, it is a maze of cobbled streets among Roman ruins. Among the most important attractions are the Roman Amphitheater – a panoramic view is offered from the Bunardzika hill – the Cathedral of Panagia, the Tzoumagia Mosque in the homonymous square, the aqueduct, the Roman Forum, and the church of Saints Constantine and Helen. All these constitute the cultural and artistic pole of Bulgaria which we will see through our tour. Time for lunch and a walk and in the afternoon return to our hotel. Free evening and overnight stay.
Buffet breakfast and we depart for our return to Athens making our first stop in Sandanski. Here we can shop sports, clothing and more, at low prices but also to walk on the commercial pedestrian street of the city. Afterward, after crossing the Bulgarian border, having intermediate stops for coffee and food, we will arrive in the evening with the best impressions of the neighboring country.
