Excursion October 28 to Bucharest Sofia Philippoupoli
Come and discover a land of myths and fairy tales, of the legend of Count Dracula, of Ceausescu's bigotry and its turbulent history, of the wonderful and well-preserved castles, the mysterious Carpathian mountains, of medieval cities, of painters, of poets and writers, of incredible monasteries and churches, the special music, the popular tradition and of course the centuries-old Greek element.
Gathering early in the morning at the Syntagma for the 28th October Excursion to Bucharest Sofia Philippoupoli and with intermediate stops for coffee, food and rest we will reach Promahonas, to cross the border to the neighboring country Bulgaria. After the necessary check of our documents we will have free time in the duty free shop. Afterward, departure again for the capital of Bulgaria, Sofia, where we will arrive in the early evening. Check in at our hotel, dinner and overnight stay.
Breakfast at our hotel followed by a tour of imposing Sofia. A large city built at the foot of the imposing Vitosha mountain (Vitosha) with a huge history, important monuments, large squares and modern buildings. Our tour will begin with a visit to the former baths of the city where today this historical building houses the Sofia History Museum with exhibits from prehistory, antiquity, the Middle Ages up to the modern era. Then we'll get to the bigger one, Sofia's oldest and most famous park, Borisova Gradina. The park is a favorite spot for locals who stop by for a break from work or enjoy an afternoon stroll before heading home. Time for a walk and coffee in the park and next to the duck ponds, geese and swans and continue to the Bridge of Eagles and the impressive Alexander Nevsky Cathedral. It is the most famous attraction in Sofia and one of the largest churches of the Orthodox Church in the whole world since it can accommodate more than 5.000 people. Then we will see one of the most historic churches, the holy temple of Agia Sophia, the Ivan Vazon National Theater to arrive at the most impressive and modern building in Sofia, the National Palace of Culture. Here we are on the wide pedestrian Vitosha Avenue and main shopping street of Sofia length 2,7 kilometers full of shops, cafes and restaurants. Time for coffee and optional. Then departure via a very beautiful route to Bucharest, the Paris of the Balkans as you are used to calling it, one of the most charming cities in Europe. Check in at our hotel, dinner and overnight stay.
Breakfast at our hotel is followed by an introduction to the old and new city, rightly called "little Paris" because of its architecture and the intense cultural life it experienced. First visit to the Patriarchate and then, through a panoramic tour we will admire the triumphal arch, the Athenaeum, Revolution Square, the Greek church, the opera, the botanical garden and the military academy. Subsequently, in a prestigious area, we will visit Herastrau Park, one of the largest parks in the country. Time for coffee and food at the many restaurants and cafes within the park. Finally, on our return to the hotel, we will see the imposing House of the People, the largest building complex in Europe today, and the second in the world after the Pentagon of the United States. Its construction was started by Romania's communist leader Nicolae Ceausescu in his glory days, and today it hosts the country's parliament. Free time to explore Lipskani district, the historical center of Bucharest with Lipscani district, the historical center of Bucharest where it still retains the charm of the old town. Here we will find antique shops, small shops overflowing with old decorative objects. In the afternoon return to our hotel and rest. Our evening free from dinner at the hotel to give us a chance to go out on the town, let's walk it, to see its nightlife and try its local cuisine outside the hotel. Overnight.
Breakfast at our hotel and today follows a beautiful day with imposing castles and cities, images truly taken from a fairy tale. We will drive north from Bucharest to reach and visit outside the city of Sinaia, the city also called "Diamond of the Carpathians" as it was once one of the favorite destinations of the Romanian high society, the famous Peles castle. It is the country residence of King Charles I, a new one – Renaissance gem with manicured gardens, exuberant reception areas and rooms in many different styles. It was the first castle in Europe with central heating and an electric cleaning system with a vacuum cleaner. Then departure and visit to the village of Bran where the famous Tower of Count Dracula is located. It was built by the Saxons to protect the passage to the Carpathians from the attacks of the Turks. The castle became famous worldwide thanks to Bran Stoker, who the 1897 wrote a horror story with Dracula as the hero. In the outdoor shops of the area, we will find dracula themed wines, masks, blouses, amulets, handmade constructions etc. Then we will reach one of the most interesting cities in Romania, the city of Brasov, a well-known commercial center of ancient times. In this fairytale medieval town surrounded by green hills we will see the Black Church which is the largest Gothic church in Romania which took its name from the great fire of 1689 as it blackened its exterior in contrast to its interior which is well-preserved and houses one of the largest church organs in Eastern Europe. We will walk through the cobbled streets, between picturesque buildings that are more reminiscent of Bavarian architecture than Eastern Europe and we will come across the narrowest street in central Europe. All roads lead to the spacious central square where we will stop for coffee and food. Early evening, charmed by our day we will return to our hotel to rest, dinner and overnight stay.
Breakfast and departure for the historical Plovdiv (Plovdiv). In the center of Bulgaria, on seven low hills, the city spreads out. It basically looks like a maze of cobbled streets among Roman ruins. Among the most important attractions are the Roman Amphitheater – a panoramic view is offered from the Bunardzika hill – the Cathedral of Panagia, the Tzoumagia Mosque in the homonymous square, the aqueduct, the Roman Forum, and the church of Saints Constantine and Helen. All these constitute the cultural and artistic pole of Bulgaria which we will see through our short tour. Time for lunch and departure again for our final destination of the day the winter resort of Bansko. Short "exploration" of the city and transfer to our hotel. Settlement and rest. In the evening dinner and overnight stay.
Breakfast and some time in the city for a walk and coffee. Immediately after departure for our return to Athens with intermediate stops for rest, coffee and food. Arrival in Athens in the early evening and end of excursion.
